Panta Rhei

An aquatic soundscape that unfolds as an autonomous process like a bit of nature: this is the core idea of my soundscape Panta Rhei that washes around Jürgen Messensee's installation Piscina di Venere in the rotunda of the Essl Museum in Vienna/Klosterneuburg (Austria).

Water in its diverse aggregate states and forms of flowing is the basic acoustic material for this piece, which is permanently scanned, altered in its corporality and continuously recomposed through a random-based compositional algorithm. Here the form and energy distribution of a wave serve as the fundamental formal principle: the rising and falling of the sounds, the glissando movements and the spectral sound shifts are controlled by a time-variant wave model, the parameters of which are constantly changed by random operations. In this way, a process is set in motion that eludes any kind of external control and is carried out before the ears of the listeners like a natural phenomenon: "panta rhei" - everything flows.

Eine aquatische Klanglandschaft, die sich als autonomer Prozess wie ein Stück Natur entfaltet: Dies ist die Kernidee zu meiner Soundscape Panta Rhei, die Jürgen Messensees Rauminstallation Piscina di Venere in der Rotunde des Essl Museums mit Klängen umspült.

Wasser in seinen unterschiedlichen Aggregatzuständen und Fließformen bildet das akustische Grundmaterial dieses Stückes, das durch einen zufallsvariierten Kompositionsalgorithmus permanent abgetastet, in seiner Körperlichkeit verändert und immer neu zusammengesetzt wird. Dabei dienen die Form und die Energieverteilung einer Welle als formales Grundprinzip: Das An- und Abschwellen der Klänge, die Glissando-Bewegungen und die spektralen Klangverschiebungen werden von einem zeitvarianten Wellenmodell gesteuert, dessen Parameter durch Zufallsoperationen stetig verändert werden. Damit wird ein Prozess in Gang gesetzt, der sich jeglicher Kontrolle von außen entzieht und sich wie ein Naturereignis vor den Ohren der HörerInnen vollzieht: "panta rhei" - alles fließt.
