Karlheinz Essl had never written a piece for recorder before. When I asked him to compose one, after we had gotten to know each other through several joint improvisation concerts, he developed an interactive improvisation environment in which I, as the player, enter into a dialogue with the computer and with myself: the computer reacts to me, to my musical material. It reflects, processes, and develops what I play – and I in turn react to the computer, to the sounds it creates from my material. We enter into a process in which something new emerges again and again from the interaction in each moment. Nothing is entirely predictable: what I play reappears in various transformations, but random generators determine the sequences and challenge me to listen and react in new ways.
As a player, I have four different sound effects at my disposal (flanger, ring modulator, harmonizer, and pitch shifter), which I can switch on and off individually, as well as a randomly generated “effect mix,” in which the computer independently creates an ever-changing mix and surprises me. So I can influence the design by selecting effects myself or by leaving it up to the computer. With Sequel, I embark on a journey that is always fascinating and exciting, often drawing me into a unique, magical sphere with sounds I have never heard before.
